Upon registering with GBF Community Services, clients will meet with our staff and be welcomed in a caring and respectful environment. Maintaining client confidentiality is a priority with our staff and volunteers. We encourage and welcome all requests for assistance as many are unaware of the many ways in which we can help. There are times when individuals and families find themselves having to make difficult choices in trying to make ends meet. GBF assists clients with secure housing needs. Community support allows us to provide the opportunity for clients to apply for financial assistance with housing costs.

Energy Assistance

GBF is a lead agency for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). Clients experiencing difficulty with their hydro or gas bills may be eligible for assistance through the LEAP program, facilitated by our organization.

Rental Assistance Program

The Rental Assistance Service provides eligible, low income households with assistance to ensure monthly rent is secure and paid in the private market. You are eligible if you have a gross annual income identified as ‘low income’ or less. You file an annual tax return and you are a resident of Grimsby and a GBF client.

Eligibility

You may be eligible if you meet all of the following:

  • You have a gross (before tax) household annual income identified as ‘Low Income’ or less
  • You file an annual income tax return
  • You pay more than 30% of your household income towards rent for your household
  • You are a resident of Grimsby
  • You must be a GBF client

You will not be eligible if you meet any of the following:

  • Your gross household annual income is more than ‘Low Income’ status
  • You live in subsidized housing
  • You do not meet the program’s residency requirements

How to Apply

  1. Download an application form
  2. Contact the Food Bank at 905 309 5664 ext. 22 to arrange for a meeting and to provide all supporting documents.

The following must be provided with your application form at the time of your meeting:

  • Proof of identity for all household members
  • Proof of residency
  • Information from last year’s income tax return. You must provide GBF with a copy for our records
  • Proof of all sources of income
  • Proof of all assistance
  • Proof of rent
  • Name and mailing address of your landlord
  • Proof of utility bills

Common Questions

When will my rental assistance be effective?
If you are eligible, your assistance will be effective the month we receive your application. For example, if your application is received in our office on February 1, your application will be effective for the month of February.

How is rental assistance paid?
Assistance is paid by Direct Deposit to your account and/or landlord account on the last working day of each month.

What if I haven’t filed an income tax return?
If you or your spouse have not filed a tax return, you will not be eligible for the program.

My minor child (under age of 18) has a part-time job; do I need to declare their income?
No. The assistance through the program is based on the income of yourself, your spouse and/or anyone over the age of 18 years.

How will I know the status of my Rental Assistance Services application?
A representative of GBF Community Services will contact you.

What happens if my income changes?
The assistance is based on your previous year’s income. Fluctuations throughout the year will be captured on your next income tax return and will affect the amount of your assistance in the future.

What happens if I move or my rent changes?
You must inform GBF immediately so we can make necessary changes to your file and adjust your assistance accordingly. You will no longer qualify if you move outside of Grimsby.

What is the maximum time that I may receive assistance?
All qualifying households will be reviewed on an annual basis. Assistance will be dependent of budget availability.

How It Is Calculated
The Rental Assistance Service reimburses part of the difference between 30% of your total income and your rent, taking into account your household size, income and rent.

Family of 2 or less $1000.00
Family of 3 or more $1500.00
